I've seen the pendulum swing over the past 50 years from a time when principals and teachers ruled with a iron fist (paddle) to a time of near complete surrender. As we allow and normalize physical and linguistic chaos and violence, our options are reduced to either looking the other way or putting thousands (or millions) of "kids" into the criminal justice system for "adolescent behavior." It may be that traditional brick and mortar schools are no longer the appropriate institutions anymore. It's utter insanity to expect kids to put down their captivating, addicting video games and TikTok and Instagram catnip in order to read a 5000 word summary of American history from 2000 page textbook published in 1989. Mark my word, public schools won't survive the way there doing thing now. It's not that we "lost" and they "won," it's that technology is changing the way we live faster than most can cope. This was a GREAT article!
