This really gets me thinking. First, my intention with the reference to chivalry, courage, and honor was meant to compare how men treated and behaved toward women historically not so much why modern men can be deceitful liars. But you are very correct, a simple Google search does cite numerous scientific studies concluding that men do indeed lie more than women and, as you say, about more serious stuff. I can't honestly explain it. My guess is (and I'm generalizing) men can't deal with or handle the truth as well as women can, particularly when it comes to emotions, love, and romantic feelings. I also wonder whether men interpret admitting they lied, particularly when caught, as a sign of weakness and failure. And women are better able to admit and own their lies and learn from them. I can anticipate men screaming at me that women are deceitful liars too, even if statistically less so than men. Bette Midler famously said when defending Bill Clinton that everyone lies about sex. Maybe technology will make it impossible for men or women to lie to each other in the future. In the meanwhile, the statistics didn't say 100% of men are "fucking liars," so I have to believe some men are willing to be truthful and honest. Thank you for your comments JW!
